4i
3oard of Health
Meeting
10/1/84
lieMeeting called to order at : o . .
Members present: Charles 3. Lawrence, Roland L. Wilson, Charles F.
Buckingham
Mr.' George Heufelder, Barnstable county sanitarian appeared by request
of the Board to ask his assistance in sampling Mashpee River. CBL
explained that tests had been made by Rhode Island Analytical Lab
with specific tests for chemical and Biological to insure that the
Landfill- was not the cause of pollution of the River. Georqe said that
he had been to DEE today and perused the folder on the closure of the
River, he felt the counts were pretty reasonable compared with some
others he had witnessed. Mr. Heufelder was given copies of the inde-
pendent tests, plus maps of the liver. George explained that although
the readings were reasonably low, they still exceeded the standards
for safe shell-fishing, 14 fecal is a medium and the counts did go
above that figure. The intention is to take 40 samples in one day
from the sane locations as provided by DEE, there is some suspect that
wild life (ducks/geese) may. be the cause of pollution; a ten test will
be made on an out-going tide both upstream and downstream to ascertain
that septics are not the cause. George noted that the files showed that
testing was done in 1979 & 1982 nothing on a consistent 'basis . Hopefully,
testing can be done the week of Oct. 8th. It was pointed out by George
,nk
that avian fecies can carry more disease than human.
Mr. Gilson suggested that Geon-e __contact Peter Jacobson with regards to
the amount of wild life on River load and the nuisance they are causing.
The Board thanked George for his -time and ensuing efforts to work with
this office.
Mrs. Thomas who was also in attendance for this facet of the meeting
introducedour new Town Planner, Tom Fidala to the Board.
Warrants signed, two payroll warrants due to holiday on following
Monday (Columbus Day) 10/8/84 .
GFB informed the Board of his encounter with Dr. Inge regarding the
immunization of School children. Dr. Nicholson and Mr. Liberty both
sanctioned the clinic. Dr. Inge had stated that if the Board ordered
him to do the immunization he would be competing with the private health
practices of other physicians, he was not being paid. a magnificent
wage and- this would require additional time and he felt they (flu shots)
are not beneficial to children. cFB made the observation that absenteeism
was far greater last year than previously, this was admitted by Dr. Inge.
CHL felt that the children should protected and not t worry about
the medical profession a.nd their fees. Dr, Inge also felt that he
would have to administer the vaccine that the school Nurse could not
be afforded that responsibility, Mrs. Monaghan would act as his clerk
during administration of immunization. cFB said he felt he was not
familiar with the protocol or the administration with the administering
- of shots such as these- -the adult clinics are being tendered by the
nurses from Upper Cape VN ,CFB suggested sending a letter to the School
officials informing them of Dr. Inge ' s decision. CHL thought this
Board should rake the decision to hold the clinic, after having the
school nurse send out the letters of permission to parents and then
find out the numbers and go ahead with the immunization. UNANIMOUS
DECISION BY BOARD To GO WITH LATTER.
