Then the fire department said if they were going to have to be responsible
for this. They were going to have to charge therm in order to fund their
expenses. So that threw everything out the window, The town then said
that they were not going to pay the fire department to do something.
IVIS. Warden noted that there was the hazardous waste account in the
transfer station account with $10,000.00 that does not get used. She
happened to glance at that and there was money left over. That money
could be used for the disposal of sharps.
Mr. Santos felt that the key issue was the funding. The next obstacles
where were you going to store them and who was going to have to handle
them, Will they be brought in a detergent bottle or a certified red
container?
Mr, Harrington Mated that that was what they were going to do if they
could get enough towns on board. if they could find a town that had the
ability to store there, or if Ma tepee had a place in town to store therm
They could also do the collection and make it each town's responsibility
to fake therm back and dispose of there individually* That way they were
not nixing and matching the funds.
Mr. Santos agreed and felt that those were the two big obstacles. The
funding and transfer.
Mr. Harrington felt that by collecting therm at the household hazardous
waste days there would be people there who could monitor the process.
People could brim them in however they wanted. They would then be
Placed into the red sharps containers. The homeowners would be doing all
of that. They would be going into a legal container, The town was not
going to touch therm if they slid not. If they wanted to bring them in in a
shoe box all the poorer to then. They would be the ones putting them into
legal container. They would thea put therm in a twenty-pound box. It was
about $70.00 per box. They haven't worked out all of the details such as
selling the quart and one half containers. Do they allow the pharmacies to
sell the quart and one half containers?
IVIS. Warden interjected that they were just discussing what might happen.
Mr. Harrington continued by stating that having Mss Lopes on board was
good because Harwich and Barnstable were both on board,, He felt that it
made sense to approach it in this manner. There would be enough Sharps
that they would be able to get an infectious medical waste contractor to
come dowry that play. He thought they would have enough to do that. Ms,
Lopes didn't seem to think so. He felt that if they got Mashp e, Falmouth,
2
