would make sure that that continues in the future. There were just a
couple of more things before they were donee Bullhead catfish$ they
probably heard stories or have even seen the fish that have cone out of
Ashumet and to some extent in Johns Pond. The USGS Inas completed a
study, although the report is still draft, hasn't been published yet. But,
they did a study on Ashumet Pond going out and collecting bullhead
catfish, which are the bottom feeders for many years going back to 1993
and 1994 when the Air National Guard did the original fish studies. There
were increased incidences of papilomas on the catfish, which were
external growths that weren't necessarily cancerous. But, ars external
growths that were not aesthetically pleasing. They went out there to see
if that still was the condition of the fish. Well they found a fairly high
incidence level, which he believed was is the % range for that
particular pond. They collected just under 100 fish in Ashumet Pond. They
had trouble-catching fish in .Johns Pond, which he believed was the same
problem they had back in 1993 and 1994. There didn't seem to be a lot of
catfish. But, although the ones they did manage to catch did have the
papilomas on them. To mane it somewhat narrower they had to compare
it to reference ponds, They selected two ponds and collected fish from
those ponds. There were Santuit Pond in Mashpee and Great Herring Pond
in Plymouth. compared to those ponds the incidences were high. They
weren't seeing the same amount of papilomas on the fish in these ponds.
The one thing that was interesting about Ashumet Pond was that fish
were much older and much more mature fish, They were larger and seven
to eight years older. The fish in the other ponds were smaller. They seem
to live a longer lire in Ashumet Pond, if that was Pert of the answer they
didn't know. The studies that were done in 1993 and 7994 didn't come to
any really conclusions about the causal relationship and there could be
many. They could be related to fuels and viruses that are hereditary in the
fish. It was something that they were looking at. There will be more
information forthcoming and they would make sure that the board gets a
copy if they don't get it directly from CJS . That was due out by the end
of this year. Then as he said with Johns Pond Ashumet Pond was safe,
That was not them talking that was the OPH for all recreational purposes
with the exception of the advisory for mercury in certain types of fish.
They talked about the CSIO fingers and the last thing he wanted to touch
upon was the residential well plan. They had been testing private wells
extensively in the area of Ashumet and .Johns Pond for going back to the
late 1980's in Briarwood, They connected all of those people to town
water in the late 180's and early 90's so that they dropped out of their
program, The only ones they had around Ashumet and Johns Pond are the
ones on the east, south and southeast side of the pond, They had done
some extensive research with the water district and the assessors office.
They've done some direct certified mailings to some People. They were
not advertisements. They may be a few People out there that still have a
19
