 Wa Mina emend-
Comms
Nf,22, 2005
: ' :3 - M
:
Mas,hpee Town Hall
Meeting called William J. Marsters
Type of meeting: Monthly
Sec reta'ryBarbara B. Nichols
A#t ds . Members, William I Marstrs William Taylor, George Bingham, Barbara B.
Nichols, Terrie Cook
Guests: Edward Baker
The minutes of the October 2 , 2005 meeting were accepted as read.
gen(
r. : . ns Le eo
i5
j]
Discussion: Barbara Nichols presented the latest pond measurements, however the latest 2 inches of rain
has increased the depth since then. It was noted that DPW had removed sand from the spillway from
about 213.the way out on the jetty, and also below the-dans about 18 feet. This does not solve the problem,
as large amounts of sand caused by the er s ion o high Nvater le v els, needs to b -ern ved fronn fay"t bei out
in the lake, the dam itself, and downriver from the darn. T rrio Cook reported Perry Ellis refused to
remove a hoard, and continuos to hold back water, with over 22 inches of boards in the dam. Joyce Mason
has not answered our request to have Mosquito Control clean out the river. 1l&s. Nichols expressed
frustration that the Town has not listened to our concerns about the high water. The late has been above
55.5 feet above sea level for the past year, and serious erosion has talkers place. Mr. Baker reiterated the
environmental concerns of water quality dower, from holding back so much water in the pond. In his
articles, Mark Nelson of Horsley and Witten wrote in 1999 about the effects of ground water on the pond
level, and noted that 1lashee had a fluctuation of 4 '/ feet in a well near John's fond. Mr. faker again
expressed the need for an index well at about 60 ft. above sea level on the walkby end of the pond. The
members discussed Mr. Costa's later of Feb. 98 to the abutters of the lake, in which he outlined a
management plan, which has been ignored. Joyce Mason did not answer our request to find out if
Conservation funds could be used to develop " as built'plan of the dam, as requested by the Mate after
a darn inspection. Discussions were held about which other State and federal Departments aright b
helpful in this cause. Bill Taylor wondered about bringing in DEP. Ed Baer suggested Fisheries and
Wildlife,, and maybe Natural Heritage, for surely they would be concerned that the erosion has buried
endangered species in a foot of sand. It was also suggested we should address Selectmen again during
public comment time.
Conclusions: The lake level remains high. Large amounts of sand have entered the river from erosion.
Town officials refuse to remove a board from the darn.
