MASHPEE COMMONS LIM'ITED PARTNERSHIP i i March 3. 2004 Sheldon Gilbey Acting Chairman Mashpee Librdty Building Committee • Dear Mr.-Gilbert, The_Mashpee ee Commons Design review Committee recently reviewed a proposed site and landscape plan for the new Library submitted by your Committee. ale the plan is thoughtful it is not consistent with the precepts of the panning principals that we are usinfor-Mashpee Commons. Locating the.building toward the rear-of the site and the- -- paring between the street-and the structure are particularly problematic. Regrettably, the proposd plant is not acceptable, Mashpee Commons LP considers the construction of a new Library to be among the most significant architectural achievements for- the community as well as for Mashpee Conte: ohs. As you know, Mashpee Commons.LP has worked in: concert with the Building Cottee for many months. our architect, Randall hnai, has dedicated many hours to the design of his very important civic building. we recognize the budget constraints facing the Town, and Randall has put great effort into keeping the'buildm affordable as.well as operationally functional-and aesthetically appropriate. We believe his recent suggestion, which incorporates the existing facility into a new design,provides a flexible program that .allows an option for phasing construction to achieve a cost appropriate project while' affording sufficient space for a modern and state-of-the-art library.facility. we lope the Com' rm' ffittee will vi w'this-.suggestion as an alternative worth consideration.
