{ I
Mashpee Environmental Oversight Committee
Minutes of Meeting
January 13 at 7:00 p.m.
Mashpee Town Hall, Meeting Room 2
Present: Chairman John Cahalane, Rick York, Ted Theis, Ed Baker, George Petersen
CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was opened by Chairman Cahalan at 7:00 p.m.
COMMUNICATIONS
No public comment at this time
MASHPEE BLUE BOOK
Beverly Kane reported that the 68 page draft of the Blue Book has been completed and downloaded to a
flash drive. The draft has not yet been authorized to publish or distribute and will require approval from
the original publisher, James A. Kolb, in Seattle Washington. Mr. Kolb must review the draft as well as
Mashpee's distribution plan. Ms. Kane provided Chairman Cahalane with a binder of 5 copies of the
draft as well as a second binder with 7 copies of the draft to be sent to Mr. Kolb. Chairman Cahalane will
provide the copies to Town Manager Joyce Manager in order to produce additional copies for Committee
members. Chairman Cahalan inquired whether Ms. Mason had Mr. Kolb's contact information and Ms.
Kane responded that she signed the original permission slip which contains the information, but that the
information has also been included with the letter.
The Chair inquired about obtaining cost quotes from the printer. Ms. Kane understood that Ms. Mason
would be obtaining printing quotes. Mr. Baker recommended that Ms. Mason be advised of the
specifications for the paper needed for printing. Ms. Kane indicated that the postage block on the back
cover is incomplete until a final decision is made about how the mailing will occur.
Ms. Kane referenced a letter from the Mashpee Environmental Coalition and addressed to the Chair and
Ms. Mason regarding their inability to acquire the original Orleans digital file. The Coalition, instead,
was required to download the PDF files of the document and convert them to a Word document but,
because the original document was created in a different, costly software, multiple layers created many
challenges in the editing process. Ms. Kane and Mr. Baker worked together to pull the document
together.
Ms. Kane reported that the most changes occurred in the Introduction and Chapter 1 and also Chapter 7
which required Mashpee specific information. Ms. Kane stated that the book is for the citizens of
Mashpee, not a technical book, and has been written to be very readable. Artwork from the 12 winners of
the student art contest has been incorporated into the book. Ms. Kane stated that when she initially
contacted the technical school about printing the document, she was advised that the Word document be
formatted as a PDF, but she held off in converting it in case of any final changes.
The Chair noted that funds should be available to provide for good printing. Ms. Kane indicated that she
was unsure about the costs for mailing the book. Chairman Cahalane recommended getting the word out
that the book will be arriving soon such as on Channel 17 or posters, to ensure that people look at the
book when it arrives. Mr. Theis stated his willingness make announcements to the civic clubs and Ms.
Kane suggested adding the information to the website.
