Watershed Recommendations: <br /> Lawn Fertilizer Limitation-Recommend use of no phosphorus (0)fertilizer or use of organic <br /> fertilizers <br /> Construction Site Best Management Practices-Practices on Cape have been good but <br /> occasionally overlooked <br /> Natural Shoreline Buffers-As discussed previously <br /> Structural Stormwater BMPs-To encourage more infiltration in such locations as the Town <br /> Landing area, non-bermed areas of Timberlane Drive, Bryants Neck neighborhood, Beechwood <br /> Point Drive, Cranberry Lane <br /> Continue and Enhance BMPs at Cranberry Bogs-Phosphorus has been lower compared to <br /> historic practices, continue to use low or no phosphorus fertilizers, use of computer operated <br /> irrigation systems for frost protection, pumping flood water upland to allow phosphorus to <br /> settle prior to releasing water back into the pond <br /> Septic Urades-Failing septic systems must be remedied and upgraded <br /> Waterfowl Control-Discourage feeding waterfowl and discourage them from living on <br /> residential properties since they create a lot of nutrients <br /> Mr. Kretchmer then addressed how to resolve the issue of internal loading. The pond has been <br /> experiencing re-suspension and release of sediments,with approximately 70% of phosphorus being <br /> generated. During the summer the phosphorus, which has been held in the sediment with iron, reached <br /> the photic zone and when mixed by the wind, fueled more algae blooms. Mr. Kretchmer felt that <br /> phosphorus was being released approximately every couple of weeks, but possibly nightly in some <br /> cases. Mr. York confirmed that low and reduced oxygen was often detected during the summer. Mr. <br /> Kretchmer described the ways in which algae responded to the release of phosphorus. Internal loading <br /> has been suspected as an issue because accumulated phosphorus and surficial sediment are at 600-900 <br /> milligrams per kilogram, which is a high number encouraging the release of phosphorus. It was noted <br /> that the phosphorus will migrate from the sediment. A variety of techniques exist that deal with <br /> internal loading and will control algae blooms. In considering the various options, the team considered <br /> each techniques' successes at other locations, whether or not it would apply and be successful at <br /> Santuit Pond, whether it would be technically and economically feasible and could it be permitted. <br /> Alternative Techniques-Eliminated from Consideration. <br /> Hyeolimnetic Aeration-Oxygen added to deep portions of the lake, but there is no strong <br /> stratification in Santuit Pond <br /> Dilution&Flushing-Viable option if a source of clean water and fast flushing rate, but Santuit <br /> does not have a good, continuing source of clean water <br /> Draw Down-Dropping the water level down to consolidate the sediments, but was excluded <br /> because there is limited hydraulic control of the Pond and works better with dammed bodies of <br /> water <br /> Dry Dredd-Drop the water level in order to remove the sediments with heavy equipment, <br /> but there is no control of Santuit's water <br /> 5 <br />
