M46WLL
NVI ®NMNTAL
46LITION
P.O.Sox 274 Mashpoe,MA 02649
July 5, 2010
Mashpee, in common with other similar communities, faces the challenge of effectively communicating
the nature of and the mitigation techniques for regional and local environmental problems. Substantial
progress will rely upon knowledgeable residents. Climate change, solid waste disposal and nutrient
contamination of our ground and surface waters are growing problems that can be effectively addressed
by this informed public. Local education activities about these threats, at this point, have not succeeded
in the creation of a highly knowledge-based community eager to address the problems we jointly face.
Further outreach activities are required.
The proposed"Mashpee Blue Pages/Book"has been an excellent public communications tool in the
Puget Sound Area, Orleans and Chatham on Cape Cod plus other locales. The existing Orleans
publication, tailored for Mashpee, is viewed as a major step forward for developing the"Informed
Public"needed to energize an effective mitigation campaign.
The proposed Coffee-table/magazine-style book has content and quality that qualifies it for a prominent
location in Mashpee homes.
The goal is to place a book in every household in Mashpee, copies to be distributed to the schools as
resource material for environmental education and copies for Town Hall, Town Library and other
interested parties.
The Book features:
• Answers the question, "What can I do as an individual?"
• Easily understood explanations and pictorials of environmental problems.
• Development of a"Sense of Community" via non-environmental vignettes.
• Parent interest via the inclusion of Mashpee School Children's artwork.
• Formatting with informative graphics appealing to all age groups.
• Interesting, uncomplicated content leading to a complete reading.
• A comprehensive listing of available resources "for taking the next steps."
The Mashpee Environmental Coalition (MEC) believes this book will be a significant catalyst for
improvements in individual habits and citizen support of governmental efforts to protect and enhance
our environmental assets.
0,,06 d9- ka*A— eg.144
Beverly Kane, Project Manager Edward Baker, MEC President
