2
Environmental Oversight Committee
Minutes
September 20,2007
• Mr. Myers suggested that more information on the town's website would be a
good way to educate the community as it is part of this committee's task to get the
word out. Mr. York said that the town's website was capable to add links already.
However, someone would need to update and monitor. He further stated that the
website is very user friendly. Just need a dedicated, responsible person who
knows how and has the time to do it. Mr. Myers will get information from Dave
in the IT Department. In the meantime, the committee should start thinking about
links to include in the committee's web page. All agree that this could possibly
be a good senior project or volunteer project. Also linking to the schools for the
kids to use as a resource.
• Mr. Myers mentioned that Ms. Laurent, Department of Public Works, has notified
him that recycling has increased over five and half percent and that trash amounts
are down five percent from last year.
• Mr. Theis talked regarding energy conservation and electrical consumption.
There is a LED Christmas Light System offered from Cape Light Compact with a
rebate available. Mr. Theis fees that using the Cape Light Compact lighting
would be more beneficial than rewiring. Mr. Theis will get the numbers for last
years cost on the Christmas lights to compare for the upcoming season.
Furthermore,he feels these savings should be considered for the town. Mr. Myers
stated that the town is in process of doing an energy audit. The schools are
starting and doing a good job; and it is Mr. Myers understanding that the
Department of Public Works is completely converted. Mr. York suggested this.
would be a great senior project.
• A rain garden would be considered and required for all new developing and
reconstruction. Ms. Kane will look further into rain gardens in regards to bylaws
with the Planning Board.
• Ms. Kane is waiting on report on the runoff basins in regards to bio-retention.
Because there is no report available to Ms. Kane, she is unable to update the
committee. Ms. Laurent needs to come back and address committee about runoff
to include intent.
• Mr. Their states that his committee would like to address this committee. He will
email Mr. Myers the letter and determine a date.
• In regards to Mashpee River Dredging, the Water Ways Commission needs to see
impact of 1916 dredging from inside bay. That commission's next meeting is
December. Right now this committee only receives one page summary but is
hoping for a report in the future. Purpose was for navigation and would not
overall effect on water quality. The bottom line is the river is still closed partly.
Unfortunately once the dredging started it became complicated and now there is
limited navigation. Waterways to give update. Bio-filter is still on hold and
waiting on rain to continue. Drew is to address this committee in the future.
• Conservation is preparing a list of town properties and the police department is to
assist them.
