TS, <br /> t. <br /> MASHPEE SCHOOL COMMITTEE <br /> JOINT MEETING BETWEEN THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE AND <br /> BOARD OF SELECTMEN <br /> SEPTEMBER 2 , 2000 <br /> Minutes <br /> Attendees: School Committee - Chia*r ers n Janice Mills, Kathleen Lynch, <br /> Ben Caswell, and Donna Lopez. Theresa Cook was absent this evening. Also <br /> in attendance was superintendent of Schools Sherwood Fluery. <br /> Board of Selectmen - Chairman David Leveille, John Cahalane, Wayne Taylor, <br /> Kenneth Marsters., and Chuckle Greene. Also in attendance was Town <br /> Administrator Robert Whritenour, Jr. <br /> Mrs. Mills called the joint meeting to order at 6:10 p. . in the Selectmen's <br /> Meeting room located in Town Mall. <br /> Tonight's meeting was arranged to discuss the latest request from <br /> representatives ofRAGE (Residents Advocating Government ent Equity) and State. <br /> Representative Nancy Caffyn wherein they are asking the School Department <br /> to, Dace again, become involved with the lawsuit which considers state <br /> funding inequitable on the Cape. <br /> Representative Caffyn began the discussion stating that Mashpee funded <br /> $5,000 toward their effort three years ago and would be seeking an additional <br /> $5,000 for the second lawsuit. <br /> After a brief outline of' their current request, RAGE President Tom Michael <br /> introduced RAGE, Attorney Anthony Alva who addressed the Selectmen and <br /> School Committee with a detailed description ofthe lawsuit that was filed in <br /> 1997 which was ultimately di missed and ruled that the lawsuit was <br /> unfounded. <br /> Mr. Michael and Attorney Alva also stated that in order to continue their <br /> efforts, RAGE representatives require the name of a student plaintiff who has <br /> been directly affected by the lack of programs in the Mashpee schools. <br /> RAGE Vice President John Ladner described the type off funding needed t <br /> continue this lawsuit. He said that in addition to the $5,000 from each town <br /> participating in the lawsuit, Barnstable 'County would contribute additional <br /> funds. <br /> Discussion followed regarding ghat programs are lacking in the Mashpee <br /> Public Schools due to a lack of funding at this point. <br />
