1A HPEE SCHOOL DMMITTEE <br /> FEBRUARY I 1�t 2002 <br /> SPECIAL JOINT MEETING SCHOOL COMMITTEE, BOARD OF SELECTMEN AND FINANCE <br /> COMMITTEE <br /> Minutes <br /> Attendees: School Committee - Chairwoman Theresa Cook, Ben Caswell, Mollie Reis, and Janice Mills. <br /> Peter Thomas was unable to attend this evening's joint meeting. Also in attendance were Superintendent of <br /> Schools Sherwood Fluery and Business Administrator Michael Tarlow. <br /> Board ofSelectmen — Kenneth Marsters, David Le eiile, Wayne Taylor, and George " hu ie" Greene. <br /> John Cahalane was absent this evening. Also in attendance were Town Administrator Joyce Mason and <br /> Town Accountant Diane l ommelrne ger. <br /> Finance Committee — Chairman Jeffry Arnold, Dean Arden, James Morgan, Carlton Meredith, and <br /> Kathleen Lynch. Frederic Blythe was absent. <br /> Mrs. Cook called the School Committee to order at 6:05 p.m. in the Selectmen's Meeting Room in Town <br /> Hall. <br /> Tonight's discussion was the fiat that focused on the FY03 school department budget. The School <br /> Committee presented a preliminary budget of$17,492,000. Mr. Fluery began the discussions stating there <br /> are three areas of concem. They are: <br /> 40 1. Contractual obligations totaling approximately$1,000,000. <br /> 2. Facing $200,000 deficit in special education between now and next year with increased <br /> tuition costs. <br /> . Some operational costs that are contracted and cannot be changed. <br /> Mrs. Mason discussed the available areas of revenue followed by questions from the Selectmen and <br /> Finance Committee. Discussion also focused on the special education account. <br /> Mrs. Mills reiterated that rumors circulating regarding the elimination of the Advanced Placement courses <br /> at the high school are not true and are not on the list of cuts. <br /> After more discussion regarding the budget,the School Committee was advised to trim$1,500,000 from its <br /> vreliminary figure of$17,492,000. The administrative turn will meet to meet this request. <br /> Another meeting date was set for Monday, February 25,2002 at 6:00 p.m. in the Selectmen's Meeting <br /> Room in Town Hall. <br /> Motion made by Mrs. Mills,seconded by Mrs.Reis,to adjourn the joint meeting at 6:57 p. . <br /> VOTE: Unanimous <br /> Respectfully submitted, <br /> t <br /> Marjorie R.Bevacqua <br /> School Committee Secretary <br />
