MCAS Test Taking Strategies <br /> The following strategies may help students in reducing test anxiety: <br /> • Get plenty of sleep!This is extremely important the night before a test. <br /> • Begin your day early with a health breakfast and wear comfortable clothing.Good nutrition helps to fuel <br /> your brain. Parents, make sure that your child gets up early enough so that they will be on time to school <br /> as we start testing first thing in the morning. <br /> • Think positive! Focus on your strengths,not our weaknesses. Keep a positive attitude throughout the <br /> entire test and try to stay relaxed. <br /> • If our start to feel nervous,take a few deep breaths to relax.This technique can help you calm down. <br /> Close your eyes,take a long,deep breath, hold it and exhale slowly. <br /> • Being well prepared for the test is the best way to reduce test taking anxiety. <br /> During Testing: <br /> • Focus on the question at hand and don't let your mind wander on other things. <br /> • Don't worry about how fast other people finish their test:just concentrate on your own test.You will have <br /> as much time as you need to finish. <br /> • Pay careful attention to all directions. <br /> • If you don't know the answer to a question,come back to it after you have had an opportunity to thin <br /> about it.Just don't forget to go back! <br /> • Read every possible answer—the best one may be the last one! <br /> • Read and respond to items, one at a time, rather than thinking about the whole test. <br /> • Re-read passages to help you select the correct answer. <br /> • Make sure to record you answer in the correct place on the answer booklet. <br /> • After you have completed your test,always go back to review and check your answers. <br /> • Keep a good attitude and think positively! <br /> PARENT TEST-SUPPORT STRATEGIES <br /> Preparing for Testing <br /> • Note test dates on our home calendar;schedule appointments on non-testing days. <br /> • Encourage your child to take responsibility for homework and class study. <br /> • Help your child learn how to find information independently. <br /> • Praise your child for work done well. <br /> • Encourage your child to ask questions at home and in class. <br /> • Get to know your child's teachers. <br /> Page 14 of 30 <br />
