Cape nancial
CodFilidncatioii
DRAFT COPY
HISTORY
Credit for Life Fairs have been taking place throughout Massachusetts for over a
decade.
The fair concept was introduced to Massachusetts communities in 1999 by
Consumer Credit Counseling of Southern New England (now Money Management
International) and it has been shared freely and openly with other community based
organizations for over a decade. Celebrating its 11th consecutive year, the Brockton
High School Credit for Life fair,in collaboration with HarborOne Credit Union and
Brockton Housing Authority, is the longest running fair in Massachusetts.
Since 2009,fair coordinators have met annually to share the best practices and
formulas for a successful, impactful, and sustainable fair. With the wealth of
knowledge shared at the annual meetings and the increasing demand for a guide to
hosting a financial education fair from communities throughout the Commonwealth,
the Financial Education Division of the Massachusetts State Treasury deemed that
all communities needed to have access to instructions on how to plan a successful
fair.
On June 30th 2011,the Massachusetts State Treasury asked a group of civic-minded
professionals to serve as members of the Financial Education Fair Advisory
Committee. These individuals were identified by their participation in the third
annual"Financial Education Fair: Best Practices Meeting" coordinated by
HarborOne Credit Union and hosted at the Massachusetts Credit Union League
Headquarters, in Marlborough, MA. The committee carefully reviewed multiple
versions of this toolkit, suggested content, and confirmed its accuracy. In addition,
committee members shared unique approaches, favorite elements of their
individual fairs and offered to be fair advisors for any community that is looking to
learn how to run a successful fair.
The Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank Financial Education team has customized this
toolkit for the Cape and Islands area.
Cape Cod Five ran our first Credit for Life fair in April of 2011 collaborating with
Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School. This fair was so successful
that the Bank embraced the idea to offer the fair to any Cape and
Islands high school that was willing to take on the challenge. The
Bank has agreed to assist in the funding of the fair by contributing
$1000 to your school for the fair. In addition, the Bank will also
provide padfolios for each student attending the fair.
Credit For Life Development Toolkit Page 3
