Mashpee Public Library
GREAT NECK ROAD
MASHPEE, MASS. 02649
To The Honorable Board of Selectmen and The Citizens of The
Town of Mashpees
During the past year the Mashpee Pub1ir-.Library has been staffed
by a librarian and a library aide, and has adhered to a regular
schedule of library hours which gives patrons an opportunity to
obtain materials six days a week. The increase in library hours
has resulted in a circulation of 3,567 books.
The lower level of the building has .been repainted , additional
outside floodlights installed and book carts and catalog files
added to provide needed space for new acquisitions and their
listings.
The library is now cataloged. New fiction, non fiction and
reference materialt are added systematically to afford adult
readers a wider selection. We will work in conjunction with
the new school library to meet the needs of younger readers. As
part of the Eastern Regional Library System we are also able to
borrow materials from other area libraries on interloan. In this
regard subregional conferences and workshops have been attended
by trustees and the librarian.
• Friends of ,the Library, community organizations and individual
residents have donated more than 275 books, three sets of ency-
clopedias and fourteen magazine subscriptions. All required
reading materials for Falmouth High School English classes have
been stocked . Large print books for the visually handicapped
and home delivery service to shut-ins are available. A paperback
book exchange is also in operation.
The library is open for community activities and programs have been
arranged for young people. While story hours and a film program
were not successful , a puppet show cosponsored with the Parks and
Recreation Department was. A summer nature program directed by
the Cape Cod 4 H Club attracted boys and girls aged ten through
twelve. A fall Arts and Crafts program directed by Paul Cali
will be repeated this spring. Mr. Cali has been serving as a
library intern as part of his student work.Jn the Cape Cod Graduate
Teacher Education Program under the auspices of the School of
Education of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
Library activities have been publicized regularly in the local
press and on radio. Topical displays are changed monthly in the
library. A new patron drive in May, and a Bosley Bookworm
promotion last fall encouraged citizens to use our facilities.
Community awareness of expanding library functions was also aided
• by the Friends of the Libraiy' s Books and Wares Sale last August,
and their distribution of bookmarks and posters advertising
library hours and programs sponsored by their group.
