o66ins
0169511 1) 700 Massachusetts Avenue, Arlington, Massachusetts 02174 617-643-0026
January 8, 1985
Dear Board of Trustees :
We enclose for your interest and comment a copy of a
bill filed last month by State Representative Mary Jane Gibson
on behalf of the Trustees of Robbins Library and the Town of
Arlington. This legislation bears House Docket Number 1472
and is titled "An Act Establishing the Library Building
Assistance Commission and Providing Assistance to Municipalities
for the Construction and Renovation of Public Libraries .
In essence this bill would create a commission to aid
public library planning, reconstruction, and construction, and
to assist cities and towns to meet the cost of library facility
planning, construction, reconstruction, and renovation. It
would provide grants-in-aid (on the line of the School Building
Assistance Law) of 75% of the cost of approved projects including
planning.
In 1978 and 1979 the Massachusetts Governor' s Conference
on Libraries and Information Services passed a resolution
calling for adequate federal and state funding for library
facilities to support the growth of library collections and
their maintenance for optimum reader usability and renewed
funding for construction, building, renovation, and additions .
It is our understanding that your community is contemplating
construction or renovation of its public library. We hope that
you will take the time to review this bill . We ask for your
support and that of your State Senator and State Representative .
We would appreciate your comments before the bill is brought
to a public hearing in mid-February.
Sincerely yours , c
John A . Walkinshaw
Chairman
Robbins Library Board of Trustees
