Mwhpm Public Library
P.O. Box 657
Mashpee,IIA 02649
Circulation for the month of July 1999 totaled 12,932 items. This was a new record for the number of July
transactions. It exceeded July 1998 by 1,424 items. The library issued cards to 152 new patrons;certainly
one of our highest monthly totals. Th=werel items borrowed from other libraries for Mashpee
patrons, while Mashp a Library lent out 342 items to ether libraries for their patrons. This is cenai ly the
busiest month we've ever had for interlibrary loans. I believe many of these transactions have been related
to students working on school reading lists. We have acti cly encouraged students to place requests for
books that are cheeped out. The computer assigns the next available copy so many items have conte from
other libraries. I feel we've had a much higher satisfaction level from students and parents concerning
school reacting items. We purchased extra copies of many items and have worked closely with students to
fill their needs. Having Janct on staff`to work with the children has made a tremendous difference.
Included in the monthly total were 8,297 adult,4,297 juvenile and 3 36 young adult items. Patron visits for
the month totaled 6,257.Types of materials circulated included 5,206 fiction, 1,611 non-fiction, 1,029
paperbacks, 349 periodicals, 3,,287 videocassettes,872 audiocassettes and 564 large print items.-This was
the first time we ever cit ttlated more than 1, OO paperbacks. Much of that number is due to use by
students who seem to prefer the paperback format. The library lcnt items to 5,765 Massachusetts residents
hose primary residence is outside of Mashpe . There were 648 out-ofstate residents who borrowed
books. During July, 7,732 patrons made use of the library's services.
Early in the month,Prelintinary winng was installed for two additional CLAMS workstations. Computers
have been ordered and should be received and h=led before the end of August. With the amount of
usage the library's been getting, these two additional access points will be very, welcome.
Children's Services was very active as the summer reading progmms began. This too sets a record for
participation. Janet will cover this area more fully in her report.
The Building Committee appointments were made by the board of Selectmen on July 26h. We have six
members so far and Grace Talmage has rewrxtly submitted a letter of i.ntcrest. In discussions with Joycc
Mason, she suggested David Burton call the first meeting to order. At that point, the committee can select
a chair from its members. The first item to deal with will bc setting up a meeting schedule and reviewing
the study proposals.
Overdue fines of$964.74 were collected in July and turned aver to the Town.
Financial Balances as of July 31, 1999
■
Library uric $1219288.54
,ti
Expense 1 P006.82r
Incentive Grant 8,132.22
MEG 5,039.98
Library Donation $ 7)592.18
Construction Grant $ 30,81 I.1 t
Early Childhood Mini-fit $ 23535.30
