As it turns out, that was probably the beginning of a
major failure of the system. we had a service call, which restored the heat by noontime,
but within ars hour, Kathy Makunas mentioned a slight smell of smoke. The rest of the
staff couldn't smell anything and I told Kath I'd keep an eye on it. About two hours
later, there was a stronger smell of smoke in the building and I called the Fire
Department. They detected a crack in the furnace and immediately shut the heating
stun down. If this had happened after hours, we probably would have had a fire in the
building. It'took two days to get parts and a day and a half to clean up the soot in the
furnace. Heat was restored about four o'clock on Thursday and the library reopened
Friday afternoon.
We are also, experiencing staff shortages. Mar a Howard has been out sick for over a
w _
week and is not expected back anytime soon. She is scheduled for an NHU on Saturday
because of unexplained pains in her leg.. I will be speaking to the Personnel Department
1 g
to see if we canet n kind of temporary help if Marge's absence looks like it ill g
g p l
beyond this week. .
arleen ewers,Ed I eFoe and I met with Patience Jackson on December&to review
our schematic drawings. Patience pointed out a number of areas she felt were
working on revising these areas before submittin alar
weaknesses in our layout. we are o g
grant application.
I have not made as much progress as I hoped on the library budget. luring the period
without heat it was too cola to work on my computer in any office. We will be looking
o increase Sandy Price's position to full-time next year. All departments are being asked
to submit budgets as close to level funding as possible because the revenue picture for FY
2002 is uncertain. Increasing this Circulation Assistant positron to full--time is a high
priority as you can see from the staffing difficulties we have had over the last week.
