7
Mashpee Public Library
P.O. Box 657
Mashpee, Ma 02649
The. library circul ated 109,308 items for FY 2001. This wa s 1,8 16 more items than FY
2000. There were 78,628 adult items circulated and 30,177 juvenile items and 503 young
adult iters circulated. I believe the quality of the physical space we have to offer young
adults directly impacts the amount of use they may of the library_ The small size of the
young adult collection and the lack of study space are,a deterrent t tno t young adults.
This is an area, which will be vastly unproved in an expanded library. How successful
we are at providing comfortable and welcoming space for teenagers will be demonstrated
by the amount of circulation ars improved area generates. -
The library currently has 9,257 library cardholders; an increase of 919 users over last
year. Attendance in the library totaled 69,681; almost 8,000 more than the previous year.
Children's programs increased substantially with 236 programs offered to 4,835 people,
In 2000, the library did 165 programs for 4,304 people.
Current collection size is 33,90.) items. This breaks down into 22.17752 adult and young
adult items and 11,151 children`s items. As you can see from circulation figures, adult
usage is about two and a half tune juvenile usage while the collection is two thirds more
than the iuven1le collection. The building was sized for 2 5,000 items total.
The point of these figures is to provide a picture of the continuing growth in the demand
for library services, in a facility, which is bursting at the seams. I ani spending more and
more time weeding the collection to make room for nein items. This situation will
continue until we are able to build a lamer building.
The figures provided to you come from our yearly Annual Report Information Survey
(ARIS) which is required by the Board of Library Commissioners. The report asks for
information on staffing qualifications, staffing levels, collection sizes, circulation
activities, hours'open, numbers of patrons served and programs offered. It surveys the
amount of Internet access available to staff'and patrons. Collecting this information
statewide allows the MOLL to compare libraries by population size to see what levels of
service communities provide to their residents. A second report on meeting library
standards for hours open, staff certification and amount spent on books and library
materials is due in the fall. Together, these two reports are used to determine if a library
is meeting state standards and is eligible to receive state aid and grants. Even in theori st
of times in the early 90s, Mashpee has been able to meet the certification standards
required. The census will put Mashpeein a new population group ith different
standards. we are currently open 38 hours and will need to increase this to 40 hours to
stay compliant. I will be checking with the MBLC to see when we need to make this
charge.
The Board of Selectmen approved our request to have a temporary circulation clerk
appointed for the library, This should help avoid the situation we were in last winter
