Library Trustees
8/21/01,
PAGE Two
III REPORTS: Continued
D. Building Committee : Liais n Select an Wayne Ta rlor
David suggested that the trustees invite their liaison to
a future trustees ' meeting. Not the September meeting
because. they would be receiving the- report ' from Gary, and
getting a better sense of where they stood, but maybe the
October meeting would work.
.
In Car .E 'natian' s opinion, the selec3men should not e the
 ,
ones making decisions -for the library in terms of staffing.
In the' past,, the -selectmen, have- usually taken whatever
recommendations the trustees have rade and given i.t . thei
, r
blessings'. That .,was, traditionally the way 'things have
worked here in -Mashpee.,
Gary further explained that once the library was given a
budget at Town Meeting. the trustees could make decisions
n how that budget was going to be spent. Gary asked,
"When are we going to finally sit with the selectmen and
town counsel, and draw the lines in the sand? we are a
board. We are not a committee that reports to- the select-
men.
elect-
men.
Carlo stated that this was a good issue to be raised. It
was not unreasonable to go back and explain, "You are in-
terfering in an area you have no business interfering. "
This is an area .where we do not agree .
David explained that he F-
elt with the incidents of the
p
last three or. four. . ee s , w - have made it abundantly clear
where we s tared.
David asked. Garr if he would research at the State level
and at the local level in a very investigative way, and
report -back to our trustees at the next{ meeting, cite'
cause- law relative to ghat is the trustees' role*
Helene passed out to the- meeting .CLAMS Sys-tern Circulation.
x''11
Statistics for June and July 2001. Helene thought th,e
trustees might find it inte-restincr to see a comparison of
Mashpee Library- to other communities . Hel,ene added that
there wag a difference . in the figures listed on this sheet
(June) and what they have re} o ted- to Helene -oxo the annual
statistics , You can see that Mashpee Library is right up
there close behind libraries that are much- larger in size
than Mashpee. We are a very active library for the size
community that this is, for the number of hours that the
library is open.
