]BOARD of LIBRARY TRUSTEES
+ REGULAR MONTHLY MEETING
-
-TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 25,2003
4
MASBPEE LIBRARY MEETING Roots
Present: Ann Macs onald-Dw'1ey,Dianna Smith, Carlo 'lste, Alice auppius, i marsh,David
Burton, and Helene leoc,Library Director.
2.
Aunt: Gary Eynatian.
David Burton, Chairman, called the meeting to order at 6:35 p. n.
_AiDproval,of Nfinutes
Dianna Smith motioned to accept the January 1,4, 2003 minutes as presented;Ann MacDonald-Dailey
seconded the motion; and all voted to accept, except Alice Rauppius, who abstained.
RgRorts -
Helene Ieoe, Library Director, distributed copies of the below-listed reports, along with her write-up
detailing r'easons for filling the Ciulation Assistant Position. These are attached to the printed
minutes.
lene's Report for January-20 .
darns System Circulation Statistic Report for January-2003.
o Janet url e's monthly report for January.
1
a
The reports were reviewed and discussed in gra detail...the Trustees especially focused on the
tremendous increase in workload at the Library and the dire need to fill the Circulation Assistant
Position. Due to budget constraints, Library staff has been reduced 0%,while workload has doubled.
Among the staffing issues discussed, it was also noted that in comparing staffing at Mashpee Library
to various, libraries handling similar workload,Mashpee is grossly understaffed. The 'consensus was
that.the Library cannot continue to fanction with such limited staff resources and that if, in fact,we are
unable to fill this position thea there is no alternative but to cut Library hours. Unfortunately if hours
are cut over a long-term period that will affect our accreditation. If there is no other choice but to
shorten Library hours, the consensus was that the Library would have to eliminate Saturday mormmg
hours.
Motion: Following lengthy discussion,David motioned that if by March 1 the budget constraints do
not allow hiring the needed staff in relatively short time peo ,then a letter would be drafted advising
that the Board of Library Trustees regrets that as of Leh 15 and until farther notice we are forced t
cut back on Library hours by closing on Saturday mornings. It is hoped that this Saturday closing will
e temporary, but until the budget situation changes and staff can be provided we have no other
choice,-awalue seconded - _' Ii i and-it was nani roved.
Old Business
David mentioned that Gerda Sano wrote a very lovely thank you note; and that she was moved by the
reception held her honor last mouth.
Helene advised that the fund raising concerts have been going very well.
