As the current President of the CLAMS library network's.Board of Directors I would like to suggest a few corrections to your September 26, 2003 article on Sandwich's upcoming departure from CLAMS. The acronym CLAMS stands for Cape Libraries Automated Materials Sharing, a Mouthful, but one descriptive of the role of the consortium. CLAMS is a cooperative non-profit association governed by its membership of 26 member libraries n the Cape, Martha's vineyard and Nantucket, and linked by a complex computer network based in Hyannis. There is no " entrali ed control,I f what rmaterials may be excluded from outside loan. Member libraries make de%fi,si ns �`thi� kind b vote. Participation in LAMS means a library agrees to share library materials with other members. This service has made more than 13 million books, videos and audio materials available to Cape residents from Provin etown t.o Nantucket to Oak Bluffs to Sandwich and points in between. As members, we are proud to be able to offer this kind.of literary service to our residents. Last year, 240,401 library items were sent out from member libraries to fill requests in other member- libraries. Of that number, Sandwich loaned 6108 iters to other.CLAMS libraries while it received 17,929,929 items from other CLAMS libraries — nearly a 3 to' 1 -ratio in net borrowing. While member fees.and orresponding'services have indeed increased over the years, Sandwich's FY2004 fee of approximately ately $36,000 way' in fact the same as it was in FY 1997. Its fee decreased in FY 19987 FY 1999, and in FY 000 to $25;399). Fart of the increase from FY2002 to present.can be attributed to Sandwich's addition of workstation connections, total holdings, aid new iters. This latter category alone increased by over 200 from FY 002 (4057) to FY2003 (9158). We are sorry that Sandwich has chosen to leave the Cape consortium, though we wish the town#s library and library patrons well on their new alliance with OCLI .
