VA
TOWN OF MASHPEE
, ?I BOARD LIBRARY TRUSTEES
0 Minutes of the Meeting of Tuesday, February 17, 2004
Trustee Attendees: Also Attending: Trustees Absent:
David Burton Helene DeFoe, Library Director Heather Lakatos
Dianna Smith Mimi Marsh
Alice Iaupp#us
Carlo D'Este
Ann MacDonald Dailey
Chairman David Burton called the meeting to order at 8:00 PM. Review of the minutes from the last
meeting was postponed until the next Board meeting on March 9, 2004.
LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
Helene DeFoe stated that the Mashpee Public Library is one of the busiest libraries on the cape(See
Attachment A). Helene reported that at a meeting with Joyce Mason, she was asked to level fund the
budget for the coming year. This position was vacated 2 years ago when the employee who had that
position was promoted to a higher job. Funds to fill the post were approved last year. Dave Burton wi l l
plan to meet with Carlton Meredith to discuss this very unfortunate decision. Helene stated that should
the position be eliminated from the budget, it would jeopardize the library's certification because it
represents a disproportionately large cut in the library budget compared to budget cuts In other Town
departments.
Helene announced the retirement of lathy I akunus, circulation assistant, as of March 31, 2004.
.Janet Trask has been hired to replace Kathy. genet is a Iashpee resident and a former cotuit Library
assistant. Helene stated that Janet is currently in training, and is working into the job extremely well.
Budget Report for 2005(see Attachment )
Children's Librarian Report. (See Attachment e)
LIBRARY BUILDING COMMITTEE UPDATE.
Dave Burton reported that Ann MacDonald-Dailey is serving on the committee as liaison between the
Trustees, the Friends, and the Committee. Dave stated that the runt library surrey was very well
subscribed. He is stili in the process of tabulating the survey results and will report at the Board's next
meeting.
The Library Building Committee presentation to the Selectmen has been postponed to May. The
committee is continuing to work diligently with the architects to come up with an acceptable design that
will also meet their budget restraints. Helene DeFoe provides critical operational information to the
committee.. There is also a feeling of synergy between architects Roberts and Irnai and the committee.
lashpee Commons group has been very supportive as well, and continues to underwrite the architect
fees during this planning process.
Ann MacDonald Dailey Liaison Report.
Ann reported her feeling that architect Randall Imai is working hard to try to save the existing library
building on the site, working it into the plans for the new structure. Joyce Mason reported in a meeting
with Acting chairperson Bonnie Barrett that she was optimistic that the Board of Selectmen would
approve up to$3.5 ,million for the library. Savings would be realized if the Town can retain Stewart
Roberts as architect rather than select a new architect. Roberts and Irmai have completed their initial
design plans. Dave added that it had been the committee's concensus that it would be politically
expedient to delay presentation of the architect's plans to the Selectmen to May, after Town Meeting and
completion of the budget.
