Mashpee Public Library
P.O. Box 657
Mashpee, Ma 02649
As some of you may know, the Board of Selectmen agreed last night to direct
the Personnel Department to run an ad for the vacant Circulation Assistant
position. I stopped at personnel this morning to see if they could expedite the
paperwork and run the ad this weekend in the Cape Cod Times. I was able to
review the job description and ad content with Marilyn Farren, Personnel
Administrator. I need a motion from the Board of Trustees to authorize the ad
so Personnel can fax it to the Timestomorrow.
Realistically, it will probably be mid to late July when we actually have a new
staff member on board. The job will be posted until June 22"d. After reviewing
applications and scheduling interviews, we will probably hold the interviews in
late June or early July. I anticipate losing Sandy Price at the end of the summer
when she moves to Florida. This time frame will allow some overlap of having
the new person trained before we are short staff again.
News of the impending hire has uplifted the staff and re-energized them. In
addition, Shelly Gilbert and a group of volunteers have expressed interest in
tackling an interior clean up and face lift to this building. They would like to help
with repainting areas and re-arranging furniture to make the building brighter
and more inviting to staff and patrons. This is all part of an effort to generate
enthusiasm from patrons and potentials donors and supporters of the library.
Circulation for the month of May (8,150) was slightly more than May 2003
(7,871). Year-to-date, we are still running behind last year. Yearly statistics for
FY 2004 are 98,553 compared to 103,414. The major difference has been the
loss of Fridays. Once we achieve full staffing, we will be able to restore those
hours and go back to a six-day per week schedule.;
I have completed weeding the Adult Non-Fiction collection and Lauren Kaminer
and a few volunteers have shifted that entire collection. We were able to
relocate the non-fiction audio books to the beginning of the non-fiction collection
area. The whole section looks much more attractive and the patrons have found
it much easier to use. I am working on a similar project with the Adult Fiction
collections. I have started with the Large Print area because it is so congested.
Eliminating any dead wood will also be helpful when we have to store part of the
collection during the relocation into temporary space. We will be looking for
about 3,600 SF of space during the construction period. We will take only the
most active parts of the collections or items, which Mashpee owns the only copy
of a work. Lesser-used items will be put in dead storage and we will borrow
such items for our patrons from other CLAMS members.
