I became a library volunteer to learn more about
the library's infrastructure and needs and Hoped to ultimately be able to contribute to a
library able to serve its extremely rapidly growing population with increasingly more
sophisticated needs. F'or the past fifteen years I have worked as data librarian archivist for
the U.S. Geological Survey cataloging, storing and preserving data collected by this 4
year old federal alanine science center: In this capacity I struggle with many similar
problems that arise public libraries;lack of space, staff, funding, evolving technology
and the ingenuity of the human mind, and most importantly providing responsible
professional information delivery-to the scientific and public community. I hope my
experience might bring another useful perspective to the board during a very exciting and
challenging period.
The town's rapid growth, seasonal population, unusual Cape Cod heritage, and proximity
to one of the nation's largest superfund sites whose migrating pollutants have impacted
private and potential public drinking supplies, all.call for a modern effective and
technologically efficient information distribution center, one that is able to address the
needs of its population. A small town cannot support a physically large library, however
it must encourage and foster n institution that meets the needs f its unique resident
population. with informed inteigent planing especially during these fiscally
constrained times, Mashpee Public Library will continue to grow reflecting the
population it serves. The Board of Trustees can encourage voters to support and direct the
library's growth through readily available information describing growing plans, funding
