Mashpee Public Library
P.O. Box 657
`} Mashpee, Ilia 02649
Circulation for July 2007 was 15,270 items. This month's circulation exceeded
last July by 1,014 iters. This is the single busiest month the library has ever
had. Transactions jumped 3,709 items from ,dune and accounts for a 30%
increase in transactions in a month's time. Debbieina started her summer
position ori .cul f6t. Havingher help duringthispeak season has made a huge
difference to the staff. By the end of last summer, thei staff was very stressed
from coping m6th.the summer bump. This year, each of the staff has commented
to ane on how less stressful this summer has been because of the added staffing.
You will note that some of the loner Cape and Islands libraries circulated more
items in ,July than Mashpee. These libraries tend to be more seasonal than
Mashpee and their year round business drops off much more sharply than
Mashpee: We-will surpass many of these libraries later in the year because our
business averages about 10,000 iters monthly in the off season. I ars
distributing a page from my ARIS report that breaks down the yearly circulation
for FY 2007 by material types: As you can see, three quarters of our circulation
is adult materials and.one quarter is children's. Two thirds of our transactions
are boos, magazines and audio books. It is encouraging to see that people are
reading or listening to boobs more than they are watching our films.
I attended a very, interestin green tour of.two libraries in western Massachusetts..
I have written up a summary of the tour to distribute to you. It vas a very
worthwhile day and I care away many thoughts on tangs we could incorporate in
our building that woUld Increase energy efficiency without being cost prohibitive.
I provided the same report to the planning and Construction Com' miftee.
We have rebeived very Roodnews from the Governors office. He released his
capital plan on August 6 . Library construction money was included and he has
proposed spending $20 million in FY 2008. Since it is a five year plan, the M LC
feels he would support the same level each year. That would provide full funding'
with the 15% increase for all the waiting list libraries. We have received follow up
information from Maureen Killoran, Legislative Liaison for the II LC that said the
governor will sponsor a bill in September to ask the legislature to pass the new
bond bill. Both of these comr unicatio,ns are very good news for Mashpee.
;3
