Mashpee Public Library
P 0 Box 657
Mashpee MA
Circulation for July 2008 was 13,283. Circulation for August was 12,364. The
combined total YTD is 25,647, compared with 29,,965 for the summer of FY
2008. There are several reasons for the drop in circulation. Mashpee hadbeen
serving a number of Falmouth residents while their temporary library was located
in Sippiwissett. Many North and East Falmouth residents found it closer to use
Mashpee's library during that time period, resulting, in higher than normal
numbers last summer. We noticed a decline in circulation once Falmouth Library
moved baric into their renovated building Last spring.
We have a smaller collection in the temporary facility for patrons to.choose from.
About 7,000 items are in long berm storage. I feel certain we chose the right
areas of the collection for storage. We`ve had only a handful of requests for
those subject areas and we`ve been abbe to obtain copies from other CLAMS'
fibraris. Raving a smaller colfecto„ Impats the number of items taken out
using a browsing method of selection.
The staff has also noticed that patrons doing errands in the shopping center
tend to take fewer items so they don't have to go back to the car before grocery
shopping, We have noticed that the number of new library cards issued is
greater than previous summers. That means that many new people who had
never used a CLAMS library have discovered us in our new location.
On the whole, the summer season was very smooth and patron comments about
the new space have been very positive. It was the most success year for
children's programs which we all held outdoors opposite Heather's Restaurant.
Many store owners have comment on the increased foot traffic to the area since
the library moved in,
We have continued to make progress on the building project. The bidding
process has been advertised with subcontractor bids due October 15'- and General
Contractor bids due October 15''. The town expects the successful bidder to
begin by November $'. The MBLC, 8t their August board meeting, approved
remaining building grants for these libraries still an the waiting dist. We have
received official notification of Mashpee's remaining 15% increase. We are
awaiting an amended contact from the MBLC.
At the same meeting, the MBLC announced a Green Libraries grant opportunity
to help libraries achieve LEEDS certification. The committee had discussed
building a LEEDS certified building in the past but felt the cost was beyond our
reach. This new program would award successful libraries an additional 5%
