a
Date: August 1, Zoo
To: Helene B. DeFoe
From: Janet Burke
Re:. Monthly deport
The month of July has seen a lot of activity in the Children's Room as 261 children have
registered to participate in the Statewide Summer Library Program "Wild Reads at Your
Library''. Children commit to read 20.minutes per day for at least 5 days a week and
record their-time on a reading log. When children bring thew reading log into the library,
they-receive a small prize for their reading e 'ort and for visiting the library. This
summer we are-givmg out more weekly prizes than ever before. In previous years, I
planned.for a mmmum of 72 children to collect their weekly prze. This summer, it is
close-to 100 children per week collecting their prizes. I am guessing that our location,
next to a grocery store, is having an impact on the convenience of collecting weekly
do
pr], es,
For the second summer, the lahpee Public-Library is participating in the Statewide
Online Summer Reading'Program. I have set up three programsonline: ons for Kids,'
one for Teens and one for Adults. Students who are not able to visit the library can still
participate ire the online program from home. Another advantage of the online prograrn is
that I am able to offer a summer reading program for teens and adults, something that
VMS'available for the first time last summer, We have 52 children registered online, 2
teens and 3 adults.- Participants log their reading time(children)or number of books
(teens and adults)and are able to post previews to share with other participants. Children
who are registered onne can come into the library and log.on to the site in order to
collect heir weekly reading prize. I have been using the XO Laptop, especially on busy
Saturday mornings;.four owe summer reading participants..
As part of the Summer Reading Program, I have offered weekly Trivia Contest: The
winner each week receives a`wild Reads at.Your Library"T-shirt. we have had the
following participation for the Trivia Contest:
Jul Contest Entries 32
th
July 1 Contest-.Entries 2
July Isp Contest Entries 30
July 2e Contest Entries 40
Rosemary Modic, our Early Childhood Specialist from the Upper Cape Family Network,
has been providing a s miner-session of Toddle Time.
