Mashpee Public Library
P 0 Box 657
Mashpee MA
Circulation January was 8,992 items. This compares with tast'year's circulation
of 10,088. Year-to-date circulation 70,781, compared to 79,776 items circulated
during the same time period last year. We were noticeably busier in terms of
people coming to the library in January but they have not taken out as many
items as they did in the old building. .
I have received Joyce's budget recommendation for the library. She accepted the
1% reduction I proposed. She presents her recommendations to the Selectman
and Finance Committee within the next few weeks. The article to create the two
new library positions has been submitted.
BufFtree Building has been pouring the footings and foundations-for the building.
We are now meeting at the trailer on site. Bufftree monitors the temperature for
all pours and has.protested the concrete with insulation blankets. Rick and the
subcommittee are pleased with the progress and quality of work we've seen so
far. The town received the second grant payment last week. To date, we've
received 60% of the total grant funds. Rick has started to submit monthly
reports to Patience Jackson, detailing our progress.
I am collaborating with Barbara Notaries and the Friends on a young adult grant
oppoi-tunity. It is federally funded, targeting Youth at Risk. The main priority is
programs serving age ranges of 14 to 24 year olds. The secondary focus will be
for programs for !ow income families with teens or in housing or employment
transition. The grant is through the Cape Cod Youth Empowerment Initiative, in
partnership with the University of Massachusetts, Donahue Institute and the
Cape Cod Justice for Youth Collaborative. We are hoping to receive a grant to
help develop- Yong Adult programs and resources for the new building. We will
have great space for teen and want to have in place programs and resources to
entice them into the library. - `
I brought copies of statistics on the downloadable audios we added last March.
Mashpee has 'the second highest circulation among the 31 participating libraries.
We recently added MP3 titles which will play on an IPOD or a Mac computer. The
largest number play on Windows based PC or MP3 players. We have 1,177 titles
in the digital collection. Collectively, they circulated 7,013 times. {
We've added an online book club called DearReader.com. Patrons sign up for the
club and get an email Monday through Friday. They read a few pages of a book
each day. If they like it they can request the book and finish it. This is a service
geared to those who might not come to the library regularly.
E
