MASHPEE PUBLIC LIBRARY
PROPOSED TIME CAPSULE
I. A means to provide the entire community an opportunity to record items and events of
personal significance, and to share and document these memories during a sealing
ceremony.
H. Tips for building a time capsule:
1. Select a retrieval date 25 to 50 years
2. Choose an"archivist' or director TBD
3. Select a container TBD
4. Find a secure indoor location, not"buried" PCC specification
5. Secure items for time storage Public ceremony
6. Have a solemn "sealing ceremony" Date TBD
7. Don't forget your time capsule! Install plaque
8. Inform the International Time Capsule Society of the completed time capsule project
M. Solicit proposals for items to be included in the capsule from groups and individuals.
Involve the schools,Chamber of Commerce, Town, Senior Center,Womens and Mens
Clubs,Boys and Girls Club,Houses of Worship,Wampanoag Tribe,and individuals.
Each group will be asked to propose 2-5 objects to include that reflect the spirit of the
present. Each group will be personally contacted,as well as through an article in the
Mashpee Enterprise. Anything that captures the spirit of the present is a candidate, but
things to consider might include:
• Popular toys or tools.
• Labels or packaging of favorite foods or other products. Include price tags,if you
can.
• Newspapers or magazines showing current events or current trends.
• Photographs.
• Coins.
• Descriptions of what it is like to live right now. Tell your future audience about
daily life. Talk about ordinary day-today activities;current fads, fashions,
attitudes, and trends;how much everyday objects usally cost, and anything else
you would like to say.
• Indicators of high technology. Even if nobody can read the contents of a DVD in
50 or 100 years, you might still enclose one to demonstrate the state of the arL
IV. The Trustees can sponsor an essay contest for the students in September. Students
can be asked to describe the importance of family, school, city, country in their lives.
rA
