 {. -
Maria Cortez, a library patron who moved to Mashpee from Chile three years ago, has
been working with nye to provide a Bilingual Story Time for school age children. While I
read stories in English, Mafia reads the stories In Spanish. We also play bilingual games.
We held two bilingual story tines in July. On July 9 , there were 9 participants. On July
23', a representative from Regal Cinemas carne the library to promote the opening of the
new movie, J Force. She brought two free movie passes for a raffle, and movie trinkets
for all of the children. At this story time we had 11 participants.
Peter and Ellen Allard, award winning children"s recording artists, performed at the
library on July 7 . We had hoped to have an outdoor performance on Jay Street,
however, the rainy, weather did not cooperate. Fortunately, I was able to use a vacant
storefront. This event was sponsored by the Friends of the NW hpee Library and attended
y 85 participants.
Iinornan Space was an excellent science demonstration for families that was held at
Christ the King Parish Hall on July 1 . Unfortunately, the Community Pictiic and
Fireworks were rescheduled for the sane date, which probably affected our attendance.
This evert was sponsored by the Friends of the Mashpee Library and attended by 85
participants.
5
The 4-H Coastal Explorer was parked at the library on July 2&from 0:00 to 3:o . The
marine life exhibit was sponsored by the Friends of the Mashpee Library and 171 people
took advantage of this educational opportunity.
The Elbows, a children's rock band, performed at the library on July 21 . It was planned
for an outdoor concert on Joy Street; however, once again, the eater did not cooperate.
Fortunately, we were able to use ari empty storefront. This event was sponsored by the
Mashpee Cultural Council and attended by 150 people.
Montana l ushers, Real Hero Sled logs, visited the library on July 2 '. This event, held
at Christ the King Parish Hall, was sponsored by the Friends of the Mashpee Library.
Harry and Dela parked in front of the library for an hour before the show. They 99.meeted
and greeted' with about 50 people to introduce them to the dogs and promote-the event.
The hugely successful program was attended by 175 people of all ages. I was most
impressed by the multi-generational appeal of this event—there were families with young
children, adults with no children, and many teens and tweens—a difficult crowd to attract
to the l ibrary1.
