Introduction
As a quick introduction, nay name is Toni Mayo and I have been hired'as the new
Assistant Town Planner. As'many of you how, this position cones with the added
responsibility of coordinating the town's GIS efforts. I armlawn g to attend our
committee meeting tomorrow afterrr.00n and warted to give you some information on
what I plan to discuss prior to nay presentation.
A. Background
There are two basic methods for inputting map information into a IS digitizingand
p
scanning/heads-up digitizing. As I was gating to know the town's GISnvironment, I
noticed that the only input device the town has for large format maps (greater than I 1 x
1 is an outdated digitizing board Caleomp Drawing Board). This device has not been
used in over 5 years for a number of reasons:
Outdated—Old Teholo
gy
Non-supported drivers by Calcomp (The town does not have the right driver, and
s such the digitizing hoard is useless.)
In-accurate input by today's standards
Slow process when it's working.
Only vector data can be captured from reaps as opposed to a raster image, which
has more applications.
B. Deed
. large format scanner would benefit the town on many fronts. The departments who are
actively supporting this request for fanding include
Planning ep'artment
Fire Department
Police Department
Department ent of Public works
Health Department
uildig Department
All of these offices together currently maintain approximately 8,000 T 10,000 large
F .
for mat plans/maps/blueprints that are in paper form and subject to being lost forever in
the event of a catastrophic event such as flood or fire. The approximate cost to have a
consultant scan and catalogue these documents would be $50,000.- If the town had a
scanner, we could do it ourselves and save this money.
I believe the town has a robust GIS that has been kept -to-slate and is being used by
 g
many departments in town as well as the general public through the town's websit .
