Front-end tool for scanning and accessing scans
The scanning project for the Town of Masbpee is about to begin. We have, with the help
of MCAT funding, purchased a large format scanner to facilitate the Town's desire to
digitally archive all paper plans and maps, approximately 15,000-20,000 sheets in total.
In order to find these plans once they are scanned, we need to assign each file a unique
identifier. Over the course of the past 2 months, .which included meetings and
discussions with many consultants, town employees, state employees and others with
knowledge of this type of program, we have configured a system to assign a 23 digit
number to each scanned document.
This is a complicated system and as such would introduce significant human error if the
person scanning the paper sheets had to type in this number for each scan. For this
reason, we have asked our GIS consultant to develop a front-end application that would
allow for the scanning personnel to answer a series of drop-down, `English"questions
that will automatically assign each scan the correct number based on the answers to the
questions. Conversely, once scanned this same application could be configured to query
the archive of scans based on answers to the same questions.
The early estimate for the development of this application is $5,000. We have not
finalized the functionality of the application and until that is complete, we will not have a
final.quote, but this is going to the ballpark figure.
Thank you, and I would like to extend an invitation to the board to come to the Planning
office anytime to see this process in action.
-Tom
Tom Mayo
Asst.
