. A copy or the library's long-range plan is on rile at the Ml..c_ For the purposes of this
grant, you should photocopy relevant sections or provide direct quotes h-om your long-
range pian about the physical plane.
"Lack of floor space has prevented the library from-expanding public computer stations. All
stations are available to any patron regardless of age, on a reservation basis. As long as
there is.no waiting list, patrons may extend their use beyond the reserved time period.
Expanded electronic access and resources is a key component of the new building project.
Providing quiet study space, in the new library will enhance Formad Education Support.2's
Formal Educational Support page 1
"The current building is too open and noise carries throughout. Patrons and tutors use tables
in the library proper for their sessions. This is less than ideal because of the lack of privacy
and the distraction of noise from other patrons. Provision for quiet study rooms will also be
addressed in the expansion project." For nal Educational support page 1
"Community Center is an important role not being served because of the lack of space in the
library. The library has a small meeting room which seats 35 people. tit's heavily used by a
wide variety of groups-and individuals. Larger groups are-unable to use the meeting room
because of the size of the room, The meeting room is part of the library proper.arid cannot
be closed off for afte.r hours use. This design limits use of the room to library hours. A larger
meeting room with separate access is part of the design of the new building. We are looking
at adding a 100 scat meeting room, which can be divided into two smaller spaces. Many
groups are looking for evening meetings which last Tatar into the evening. Being able to close
this space off from the library proper, with a separate security system, would greatly increase
the library's ability to serge as a community center." Community Center page 1
"Space for community neves and notices is very inadequate. One small bulletin board in the
lobby is the only wall space available for posting notices. Increased space for community
notices and news will be available in the expanded library." Community enter page 17
"iA big shortcoming of the building is a lack of space for junior high or high school students. The
library staff has attempted to carve out some space for teenagers_ While an improvement over
the original design, seating space for studying is sorely lacking. The building was recently visited
by a new selectmen who commented that every available square foot was being put to use-. The
* new library will be 21,500 square feet, with a designated space for teen patrons. That will go a
long way towards addressing some of.this building's deficiencies." Suitable Facilities page 18
. Tease attach a photographic e say of your library that can serve to Familiarize reviewers who
may have not visited your library with current conditions. See Appendix F
. Has local demand or need for public library services or enhanced library services been
growing?
Demand for children's services continues to grow since a part-tire children's librarian
was added in 1998, We now offer four weekly story times, a % increase over what
was offered in 1998. Programs are offered for infants and school aged children. A fine
item for childrens performers was added in 2001 to augment in-house programming.
Many patrons use the library as their Internet access. Three public stations are
insufficient to satisfy the need. Patrons must sign up and often have to wait for ars
Sc f
y
