4.
PRESENTATION To MASHPEE PLANNING AND CONSTRUCTION COMMITTEE
By Peter White, 72 Main street, Mash e , 508-477-0238
December 4, 2007
My name is Peter White, and l arra the new Vice President for the Friends of the
Marshpee Library. I have a strong personal interest in expanding the use of renewable
energy sources and energy conservation by our towns, residents, and businesses. That
is the main reason that l have joined the Friends of the Mash pee Library, so that.1 can
help to promote renewable energy approaches for the neer library, especially solar
energy.
I recently moved here from arm' ouch, where last spring ire ssed a Town ll eetin
Article to fund a ten (1 0) solar energy system on the roof of Town Hall, which will be
installed after the holidays. !hast will be the first municipal solar energy sy term on Cape
Cod. We have a g ldmine of renewable energy here, not only solar-and wind, but
ocean energy, and it's a shame that there has been so little progress In developing
dean energy with our limitless free fuel!
Barbarar Notarius is our new President, and she has 25 years of experience in
performing fundraising, duties for the Library in Croton-on-the -Hudson in New York
State. She could not be here tonight, but she asked me to invite all of you to.become
members of the Friends of the lashpee Library. The entire Board of the Friends have-
encouraged
aveencouraged me to convey their willingness to work cooperatively with the PCC and the
Torn to raise funds to support solar energy and conservation upgrades for the neva
library. We are also interested in a water retention system for the roof.
What can vire do to help make the proposed library maximize the effectiveness of
renewable energy and conservation.improvements that will not only save expenditures
on polluting sources of energy, but Will provide a visible canp l 'of ghat should be
done for all new public buildings in Mashpee,-on the Cape, and beyond? We must do
everything possible to end our Nation's addiction to fossil fuels, for the sake of our
economy, our environment, and our children's future.
With the understanding that the responsibility for construction of the library ruts with
p t ry
the PCC and the Torn, I have contacted'a firm with a specialty in solar design who has
indicated that they can perform a feasibility study in cooperation with the Architect and
Project Manager, and the PCC. The name of the company is Solar Design Associates
of Harvard, MA w w.solardesign.com . The Friends are willing to finance this study
provided the Architect agrees to working with Solar Design Associates and the
arrangement is acceptable to the Torn.' Bolam Design Associates Inas designed
commercial buildings that are energy independent of fossil fuels of any kind, even in
northern a po ures like Maine and New bark. We can have Solar Design Associates
do one here, if people have the will and the vision to try.
