Recycling Committee
Wednesday, August 21, 2002
Minutes
Members Present: Nikki Descoteaux,, Chuck Gasior
Others: Catherine Laurent, DPW
quorum being present., the meeting was called to order at 4:00 p.m_
MEETING SCHEDULE
Glenn Santos was unable to attend because of a work conflict- C. Laurent will speak to
hire about scheduling the meeting at a more convenient time.
Coi11NM RECYCLING
N. Descoteaux scouted possible locations for a central recycling area at the Iles.
Possibilities Mnclude the fitness center, the mail building or the reception budding.
C. Gasior spoke with Cecile Synder, president of the Stratford Ponds Association.
Stratford fonds includes condominiums'. % o which-are year-round. Drop-off areas
for trash are located at the swimming pool club house and a second location within the
never development. Trash is currently picked up several tines each week. Ms. Synder
dict not feel adequate space existed at either of these locations for recycling containers.
Another concern would be the added cost.
The Committee agreed that information was needed on waste reduction resulting from
recycling. C. Laurent indicated that approximately 25% of the tonnage received at the
transfer station is recycled. A greater rate of recycling may be achieved With curbside
pick- p.
C. Gasior contacted BFI and Waste Management about curbside recycling pick-up. BF1
collects paper and commingled containers every other week. The cost is $9.50 per month
per household_ Waste Management charges $121month.
The Committee discussed sending a questionnaire to residents in Stratford Ponds and/or
in New Seabury to gauge current recycling participation, barriers to recycling, and
willingness to pay for service. Information received from a questionnaire may be helpful
in establishing a recycling program.
The Committee will think about the questionnaire, the logistics of a recycling program,
and how to "sell" it to a c ndorrminium association for the next meeting.
