Recycling Committee <br /> Mon ay, December I5,2003 <br /> Minutes <br /> Members Present: Chuck Gasior;Nikki l e coteau <br /> Others- Catherine Laurent, DPW <br /> quorum was present for a presentation to the Board of Selectmen at their regular <br /> meeting. The presentation began at 7:20 p.m.. <br /> Chuck introduced the members of the recycling Committee and explained their focus <br /> over the past two years. A Power Point presentation had been prepared for the meeting <br /> and each slide was reviewed (attached). <br /> While residents have the opportunity to recycle over 21 different materials, the rate in <br /> 2002 was only 15.8%. A study performed by members of the Cottee in their own <br /> households found that 75-80% of household trash could be recycled. In addition to the <br /> environmental benefits, recycling in 2002 also resulted in a savings of 0,000, that is, i <br /> the sarne quantity of materials had been disposed of as trash. The Town therefore should <br /> consider ways to increase recycling; Chuck listed a number of different options including <br /> increased education, commingling materials, curbside collection Pay-As-You-Throw <br /> (PAYT), and business/multi-family participation. Commingling materials could make <br /> recycling more convenient for residents as less separation of matefials would be required <br /> (newspaper, magazines, and ober papers could be collected mn one container). The <br /> Committee had approached several condominiums to assist with establishing a recycling <br /> program without any success. <br /> Selectmen Green supported additional education for residents. Chuck suggested that a <br /> recycling newsletter could be Wiled to residents, perhaps on a quarterly basis, but <br /> funding of Approximately$5,000 would be needed for postage and printing costs. <br /> Selectmen Marsters recommended that information be included with tax bills to save on <br /> postage. <br /> The Selectmen expressed an interest i <br />
