F F
Recycling Committee.
Monday, March 17, 2008
Minutes
Members Present: Nikki l escoteau , Chuck Gasior
Others: John Brown
Catherine Laurent, DPW
A quorum being present, the meeting was called to order at 2:00 .m..
RECYCLING r
Most of the reconfiguration at the Transfer Station has been completed. Mixed paper and
chipboard are bung collected together in one compactor: All#l-and #2 Plastics,
including frosted milk jugs, are being collected together in a second compactor. The
third compactor is collecting#3-7 plastics. This spring, the cardboard compactor will be
relocated to the recycling area. A "slip lane' will also be provided so recyclers can
bypass the trash building to exit.
Chuck suggested providing examples or photos of the different materials at the Transfer''
Station, particularly plastic, to assist residents with sorting. Mastic flowerp ots are
recyclable with the#3-7 plastics. Nikki suggested cheeping with nurseries to see if they
will accept the pots for reuse.
HAULER RECYCLING
Borne haulers have begun to offer recycling, though the Board of Health is still not
enforcing their regulation,. Catherine will meet with Glen Harrington, Health Agent to
discuss. The haulers complying are potentially at a competitive disadvantage if their
service is more costly because of the recycling.
At the schools, Casella is collecting commingled rec Iles. All materials are now la
ced ,
in one container rather than separate containers. The cost of the commingled collection is
comparable to the cost of the individual collections and is more convenient. Nfl ki
mentioned that New Seabur is interviewIn haul
y g r to barn abort their recycling .
program. The haulers with the best recycling programs will thea be recommended to
residents. If more residents are demanding recycling arra hiring haulers based on the
availability of recycling, neo re'haulers may be inclined to offer recycling.
r ,
RECYCLING POSTCARD
The graphic designer bas begun work on the Postcard. The Committee discussed what
information to include. The postcard will be mailed to all residential property errs in
p y . _
May.
