Recycling Committee Monday, October 18, 2010 Minutes Members Present: June Levy, Sheldon Gilbert, Chuck Gasior Others: Jon Leavitt Mile Richardson, Board of Selectmen Ed Baker Catherine Laurent, DPW A quorum being present, the meeting was called to order at 1:15 p.m.. Approval of Minutes Minutes from the August 4, 2010 and September 16, 20 10 meetings were approved. September Tonnage/Burgle Stream Update The September tonnage information from the Transfer Station was distributed. Recycling amounts increased by 12% during the first nine months of 2010 as cor p re f to 2009. There was no change in the amount of trash collected. America Recycles Day The Committee discussed hosting activities at the Quashnet School in conjunction with America . Recycles Day on November 15. The school principal is supportive of the idea. She suggested an assembly for grades 3 arra 4 and interactive classroom activities for grades 5 and 6. ,Tune is able to lead the classroom activities. Catherine will spear to Allied Waste, the Town's trash and recycling hauler about a presentation for the assembly. If not,June suggested contacting the Children's Museum. The Committee-discussed having a poster or essay competition for the different grades. An award could be given and announced at a Selectmen's meeting and in the local newspaper. June ill brainstorm possible topics for both. Recycling/Waste Management Goals The Committee reviewed a draft proclamation ofgoals prepared by Shelly. There are two separate goals to be considered. The first is that the Transfer Station operation should be self= sustaining, that is, funded entirely by users. The second is a commitment to increase recycling by a defined amount. With the later, the follow-up question for consideration is hoer to achieve the increase in recycling. The two goals are not necessarily dependent on each other and should be considered separately. The Committee will finalize the goals for presentation to the Board of Selectmen at a future meeting,perhaps as soon as November 15. The analysis of options to increase recycling which will include curbside collection, p YT, Recycle Bank, etc. will be conducted by both the Recycling Committee and the Selectmen's Solid Waste Subcommittee. The Committee scheduled another meeting for November 4, 20 10.at.3 pm. The meeting adjourned at 2:45 p.m.. Respectively submitted, { Catherine Laurent
