Recycling Committee <br /> Monday, October 18, 2010 Minutes <br /> Members Present: June Levy, Sheldon Gilbert, Chuck Gasior <br /> Others: Jon Leavitt <br /> Mile Richardson, Board of Selectmen <br /> Ed Baker <br /> Catherine Laurent, DPW <br /> A quorum being present, the meeting was called to order at 1:15 p.m.. <br /> Approval of Minutes <br /> Minutes from the August 4, 2010 and September 16, 20 10 meetings were approved. <br /> September Tonnage/Burgle Stream Update <br /> The September tonnage information from the Transfer Station was distributed. Recycling <br /> amounts increased by 12% during the first nine months of 2010 as cor p re f to 2009. There was <br /> no change in the amount of trash collected. <br /> America Recycles Day <br /> The Committee discussed hosting activities at the Quashnet School in conjunction with America <br /> . Recycles Day on November 15. The school principal is supportive of the idea. She suggested an <br /> assembly for grades 3 arra 4 and interactive classroom activities for grades 5 and 6. ,Tune is able <br /> to lead the classroom activities. Catherine will spear to Allied Waste, the Town's trash and <br /> recycling hauler about a presentation for the assembly. If not,June suggested contacting the <br /> Children's Museum. <br /> The Committee-discussed having a poster or essay competition for the different grades. An <br /> award could be given and announced at a Selectmen's meeting and in the local newspaper. June <br /> ill brainstorm possible topics for both. <br /> Recycling/Waste Management Goals <br /> The Committee reviewed a draft proclamation ofgoals prepared by Shelly. There are two <br /> separate goals to be considered. The first is that the Transfer Station operation should be self= <br /> sustaining, that is, funded entirely by users. The second is a commitment to increase recycling <br /> by a defined amount. With the later, the follow-up question for consideration is hoer to achieve <br /> the increase in recycling. The two goals are not necessarily dependent on each other and should <br /> be considered separately. The Committee will finalize the goals for presentation to the Board of <br /> Selectmen at a future meeting,perhaps as soon as November 15. The analysis of options to <br /> increase recycling which will include curbside collection, p YT, Recycle Bank, etc. will be <br /> conducted by both the Recycling Committee and the Selectmen's Solid Waste Subcommittee. <br /> The Committee scheduled another meeting for November 4, 20 10.at.3 pm. <br /> The meeting adjourned at 2:45 p.m.. <br /> Respectively submitted, <br /> { <br /> Catherine Laurent <br />
