Recycling Committee <br /> August 18, 2011 Minutes <br /> Members Present: June Levy, Sheldon Gilbert, Marion Baker <br /> Others- Jon Leavitt <br /> Mike Richardson,on, Board of Selectmen <br /> Catherine Laurent, DPW <br /> 4 <br /> quorum being present, the meeting was called to order at 3:30 .m.. <br /> Approval of Minutes <br /> There was not a quorum at the April 7th meeting so there were no minutes to approve. <br /> Tonnage/Single Stream Update <br /> The Committee reviewed the 2011 tonnage information from the Transfer Station to date. There was <br /> an 11% increase in recycling and a dight reduction in trash to date for the year. Jon noted Sandwich <br /> saw an almost 0% decrease in trash in the Vt month of PAYT. Catherine will check the number of <br /> stickers sold in 2011 as compared to 2010. <br /> Update on Solid Waste.Disposal options <br /> The Committee reviewed a letter drafted by Shelly addressed to the Selectmen. The letter requests an <br /> update on their subcommittee's evaluation of solid waste disposal options and a decision/timeline to <br /> implement PAYT. The Committee unanimously approved the letter and the letter was signed. Mike <br /> will deliver the letter to the Board at their next meeting on August 22n . . <br /> Single Stream Educational Campaign <br /> The Committee discussed sponsoring another campaign to promote single stream recycling. If <br /> Transfer Station users voluntarily recycled more, there would not be as strong a reason to implement <br /> PAYT. The Committee agreed to purchase another banner. They also brainstormed on ideas for <br /> signage to place as vehicles exit the recycling area andor in the trash area.- Ideas included" ops. <br /> Back up. You missed the recycling.", "If you're not recycling, you're burning money." "Support your <br /> community—recycle!" The Committee discussed reconfiguring the parking at the recycling arca to <br /> designate spaces so more vehicles carp park. The Committee also asked to remove-th "tree" at the <br /> Transfer Station. <br /> School Recycling Education <br /> The Committee discussed making sure recycling containers are available at events and in buildings, <br /> both school and other. They discussed coordinating an activity with the Children's Museum and the <br /> Boys & Girls Club. A hands-on activity would work for Grades 2- . A presentation would be more <br /> appropriate for th—High School. Mashpee Cares or the High School Environmental Club might be <br /> g g g <br /> interested in working with the Committee. Tying an activity to a holiday such as Halloween or <br /> Christmas night be another idea. <br /> The Committee scheduled another meeting for August 31 t 3:3 0 pm. <br /> The meeting adjourned at :00 p.m.. <br /> Respectively submitted, <br /> ,atherine Lau e <br />
