13
Board of Selectman
Minutes
June 4, 2018
Discussion and Aroval of Letter to the New England Fisher Mana ement Council; Atlantic Herrin
Fishery Management Council; re: Amendment 8 to Atlantic Herring; Cape Cod Commercial
Fishermen's Alliance:
Amanda Cousart, Policy Analyst and Community Organizer of the Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen's
Alliance was in attendance to request the Board accept the draft letter to the New England Fishery
Management Council regarding Amendment 8 to the Atlantic Herring fishery.
The Board of Selectmen in their letter would request to provide comment on alternatives to the
amendment that would provide positive impact to the Mashpee community. Alternatives to mitigate
the impacts of midwater sea herring trawlers would support a 12 mile at minimum buffer from the
shore. Midwater trawlers remove entire schools of herring from nearshore areas. This disrupts the
entire marine food chain and leaves the small-boat fishermen with little to bring to the shore.
The 45-day public comment period ends June 25, 2018.
Motion made by Selectman Cahalane to execute the draft letter to the New England Fishery
Management Council as presented.
Motion seconded by Selectman O'Hara.
VOTE: Unanimous. 5-0.
Roll Call Vote:
Selectman Sherman,yes Selectman Cahalane,yes Selectman Gottlieb,yes
Selectman O'Hara, yes Selectman Cotton, yes Opposed, none
Motion made by Selectman Cahalane to endorse Andrew Gottlieb to speak on this matter on
behalf of the Town of Mashpee.
Motion seconded by Selectman Cotton.
VOTE: Unanimous. 5-0.
Roll Call Vote:
Selectman Sherman,yes Selectman Cahalane,yes Selectman Gottlieb,yes
Selectman O'Hara, yes Selectman Cotton, yes Opposed, none
