7 <br /> MAH EE SCHOOL COMMITTEE - REGULAR MEETING AUGUST 7r 1996 FWGE 3 - ,- <br /> 8*7 Use of Crossing Guards - Route 151 -- Because there will be <br /> no traff is lights installed at the intersection of Route 151 <br /> and Old Barnstable Road by the time the high school opens, <br /> Dr. DeMoura explained the need for crossing guards at that <br /> location. In discussions with the Police Department, Dr. <br /> DeMoura advised hiring two crossing guard be hired initially <br /> for two hours per day at $7.00 per hour for every school <br /> day. Both guards will, require outerwear totaling <br /> approximately $750. Initial costs will be approximately <br /> $4,000 for the school year with the School Department <br /> responsible for wades and clothing while the Police <br /> Department would be responsible for supervision. <br /> At this point, Dr. DeMoura introduced Deputy Police Chief <br /> Maurice Cooper who addressed the Committee on this issue a <br /> well. He reiterated that the Police Department would be <br /> responsible for supervision of the crossing guards because <br /> training would be required. <br /> Mrs. Lynch asked how long before a set of traffic lights <br /> would be installed? Mr. Williams answered said that is <br /> qF <br /> unknown at this point. <br /> Mrs. Mills said the crossing guard is definitely needed. <br /> Motion made by Mrs. Mills, seconded by Mrs. Cook, to hire <br /> two crossing guards. <br /> Mrs. Lynch asked that once the lights are up, do we need to <br /> commit to having crossing guards for one year? Will theme <br /> be a need to keep them? Dr, DeMoura said that will when the <br /> lights are installed, an evaluation will have to be done. <br /> Mrs. Lynch amended the motion by hiring two crossing guards <br /> and then re-evaluate the situation once the lights have been <br /> installed for at least one month. She said this workshop is very <br /> similar to the Day on The Hill but on a federal level held <br /> in Washington, D. C. <br />
