F <br /> MASHPEE SCHOOL COMMITTEE - SPECIAL MEETING - JANUARY 16, 1997 <br /> PAGE 2 <br /> Mrs. Cook said although the kindergarten enrollment figures dropped <br /> this year, then the pre- first program began nine years acro, the <br /> numbers were higher. <br /> Mr. Paxton expressed concern regarding the addition of a second <br /> pre-first program. He said, "I don 't unde s d how you can expect <br /> to retain 30 percent of the kindergarten kids. we have a full-day <br /> kindergarten and youfre asking that we have another pre -first <br /> program. It's an incredible amount of money we're spendin, and <br /> they haven't reached first grade yet. " <br /> Elementary School Principal Louise Doyle expressed hope that <br /> another pre--first program would help keep some children from <br /> becoming special education students later on which would also <br /> become very expensive. <br /> Mrs. Lynch questioned the high schoolfs alternative education <br /> program. She said if one alternative education teacher along with <br /> an assistant would be sufficient to handle the behavioral problems <br /> at the high school level, Mr. Williams said perhaps just grade 9 <br /> and 10 for next year would be considered but grades 7 and 8 would <br /> also need to be studied. <br /> Ms. Macdonald expressed concern over the lack of enough coverage in <br /> the main offices at each school.
