r
MASHPEE PUBLIC SCHOOLS
SPECIAL, MEETING
MARCH 2 , 1997
Minutes
Attendees: Chairman Steve Paxton, Kathleen Lynch, Theresa
Cook, Janice Mills, and Maryanne anne Macdonald. Also in attendance
was Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lincoln A. DeMoura.
The special meeting was called to order by Mr. Paxton at 7:05 p.m.
in High School Conference Room -103.
Mr. Paxton said this meeting is a continuation of the FY98 budget
meeting that was held on March 11, 1997.
Dr. DeMoura discussed correspondence received from Special
Education Director Grace Darr which describes the proposed high
school pre-vocational, developmental program. He said $40,000-
$45,000 (
a l r-oximately $30,000 for tuition and approximately
$10,000 for transportation) would be expended for this
comprehensive special education program that would provide basic
life skills instruction in ars intensive setting to promote
independent success. This program would be housed in the high
school. Mrs. Day outlined this self-contained program that would
offer social. skills, i.e., how to use a checkbook, learn simple tads
with academic instruction. This program would require a teacher,
half-time teaching assistant and materials. T school system
would be in non-compliance of special education mandates if this
program is not implemented and would lead to placing about 10
students in grades 7-9 in out of district placements. Prior to this
program, these students were integrated in the classrooms. The
curriculum would be structured to individual educational plans.
Dr. Iielloura outlined the long-tezxn substitute teacher
compensation memo that compared Ma h ee substitute teacher
pay with other Cape towns. Mrs. Lynch suggested'revisiting this
issue at a later- slate.
