J <br /> MASHPEE SCHOOL COMMITTEE - REGULAR MEETING - JULY 28, 1997 PAGE 13 <br /> • equitable distribution of resources <br /> • promotes the development of strong programs <br /> • more personal relationships between students and staff <br /> • <br /> stabilizes the school environment <br /> He reiterated that the only cost to reorganization has len the <br /> difference in the salary of the Middle School assistant principal and the <br /> alatr of the Quashnet School principal. Some minor maintenance costs <br /> have been incurred such as the installation of used air- conditioner taken <br /> from the Superintendent's office t Town Hall. Other costs, he feels, are <br /> a result of growth. He stated 263 students have entered Mahee <br /> Schools in grades K-6 since the reorganization concept began in <br /> September, 1995. He said enhancement to the building such as signs, <br /> should not be considered re organizational costs and that educational <br /> benefits should be our main goal. <br /> Upgrades for the computers were needed anyway and should not be <br /> considered an additional cost. Mr. Paxton said if there was one school <br /> system, there.would be no need for a computer lab. He continued saying <br /> library looks, hiring teachers, a computer room, and specialists are all a <br /> ley-product of reorganization. Dr. DeMoura disagreed stating that the <br /> hiring of teachers is a matter of how many students are in a classroom. <br /> Ms. Macdonald asked if it was fair for two schools to have the same <br /> specialist for seven gears while the other school does note Dr. DeMoura <br /> answered that it is the quality of the teacher that is important. He said <br /> that vire have grown 260+ students since the discussion of reorganization <br /> began. Discussion followed on inclusion classes. <br /> Ms. Macdonald asked, "when are these expenses going to -stop?" <br /> Dr. DeMoura said some of the expenses are results of growth while <br /> other are a result of School Committee decisions. <br /> Mr. Paxton said .if we were using a K-2 or K-3 school system, there <br /> would be no need for a librarian. <br /> Mrs. Lynch asked to have the policy regarding all purchases over <br /> $2,000 be placed on the August 20th agenda. <br /> Due to the length of this discussion and the lateness of the hour, a <br />
