MASHPEE SCHOOL COMMITTEE - REGULAR MEETING - DECEMBER 3, 1997 PAGE 9 <br /> VIII. Specifically 8.1 Superintendent Evaluation Instrument - Motion made by <br /> Assigned/ Mr. Paxton, seconded by Mrs. Cook, to approve the Superinten- <br /> Un£nished dent's evaluation instrument. <br /> Business VOTE: Unanimous <br /> 8.2 Teacher Assistants - Dr. DeMoura, once again, asked the <br /> Committee to reconsider his proposal to hire six .5 time teaching <br /> assistants with two to be placed in each elementary school. He <br /> explained there is a dire need to hire additional support staff <br /> asking "What are we going to do for children who are not <br /> successful? Are we going to extend the school day? Are we going <br /> to extend the school year?" <br /> Mrs. Mills suggested finding money for one assistant per school as <br /> well as earmark those people for upcoming reading needs. Mrs. <br /> Lynch asked where the money would be taken from? Dr. DeMoura <br /> suggested perhaps from special education or grounds <br /> maintenance. <br /> Mrs. Cook said she is maintaining her previous intention of hiring <br /> two half-time teaching assistant for each school to be placed at the <br /> discretion of the principal. <br /> Mrs. Cook made a motion to hire six half-time teaching assistants. <br /> Motion was seconded by Mrs. Mills. <br /> Discussion then followed on hiring the teaching assistants, class <br /> size, lay-off costs. After much discussion, it was decided to <br /> continue this discussion at the FY99 budget meeting on December <br /> 9th. With that, Mrs. Cook rescinded her previous motion. <br /> 8.3 Part-time Audio-Visual Technician - Dr. DeMoura asked the <br /> Committee to "hold" on this request to see how the budget will look <br /> next year. Mrs. Mills asked to have this item placed on the <br /> December 9th agenda. <br /> 8.4 Leisure Services Advisory Council Liaison - Discussed earlier <br /> in the meeting. <br /> 8.5 "Use of School Facilities and Equipment" Policv - KGA - <br /> Mrs. Mills asked to have a survey done on other school districts to <br /> see if their usage rates are comparable. Mrs. Cook said the <br />
