I do state un- <br /> equivocally that we have failed to support some of your re- <br /> commendations which have been offuture. requirements , recom- <br /> mendations. that have reached this Board, - which id very- aware <br /> of -and this Board has , in the last several years ,progressing <br /> very slowly under the restraints put upon it to address . We <br /> do not and have not supported a lacy of increase in staffing <br /> of the Fire Department. His second- statement was. regards to <br /> fiscal. restraints,. I- would Like to and e it very clear to the <br /> press that the fiscal restraints- placed on that departmefit are <br /> not restraints generated by the Board of Selectmen. They-are-- <br /> restraints based on fa , they are what the amount of money <br /> that this Town ha.s to expend for all departments , for all <br /> services of all departments . The services of the Fire Depart- <br /> ment are only one segment of the- overall services that this <br /> Town provides to its citizens . I will not at this time attempt <br /> to address the numerical importance - of one department over the <br /> other. I do submit that all departments are equally important.. <br /> to the well fare of the- Town. I reject out of hand the . s tat- <br /> ment that appeared to indicate than he was in the middl-e of <br /> a political arena. This ,in my opinion has - never been the case <br /> and I. would- suggest he look to his own operation of the de- <br /> partment.,with regards .to politics . I do not believe that the <br /> chie-f was -b1amed out . of hand,' I thinly it was a set of circum- <br /> stances <br /> ircum- <br /> tances that the Chief, for whatever reasons , could not or <br /> was unable to address , a. condition which existed, which he in <br /> my opinion should of. been well aware :of and in the- process of <br /> time , for whatever reason did not actress . The politics. are <br /> polities within the department iself rather -than politics in <br /> the Town. I will stand on my statement.' <br /> hm.
