MONOMOSCOY IMPROVEMENT TRUST'
Monomoscoy Island
• Mashpee, MA 02649
April 16, 1985
(APR G '4 1985
Mr. Willard L. Hanson, Chairman
Board of Selectmen
Town 6f Mashpee, Mass.
Re: Clam Grant Request of Mr. Richard Kuusela and Mr. Francis Sullivan
Dear Sir:
The Monomoscoy Improvement Trust, an Association of °108 voters and
tax payers, are not in favor of any Clam Grants or Agricultural
Licensing Grants in the Great River. These Grants and Agricultural
Licenses of rafts cause a deterioration of property'value of our
members due to the following reasons.
1 . Cause decaying odor on the lower end of the Island from
decaying leaves and dead shellfish on the rafts which are
dropped' by the gulls.
• 2. Unsightly view caused by tipped over rafts after every storm.
3. Running' a business in a Residential Neighborhood', construction
and storage of large amounts of Rafts on the shorefront, which
is also against the Town By-Laws.
4. Depriving a large group of residents from utilizing a water
area which is presently used for boating by area people.
Therefore: We request that these Grants and Agricultural Licenses
not be granted by the Selectmen, or if granted over the objection
of the people, they be limited to a shorter length of time, five years
for Clam Grants and growth for Agricultural Licenses, as this would
permit changes in Grant Requirement Procedures if necessary; that
the Town set up a weekly inspection program of inspection of these
sites to prevent odor from decaying matter, unsightly rafting, and
that the Grants are neatly run with the least interference to public
access to open water and adjacent land area.
A Grant is a privilege to a person, not a right, and it does deprive
the public of usage of waters where it is located.
•
i
