Selectmen' s Minutes Page
/12/79
5 . Continued:
Garland: l don' t think it is necessary,,
O'Connell: At the same time, I do believe that the
reason x of the vote prior to the town meeting
was set at $5,200, 00 per board member because
of the time spend on town business each week.
Your going to spend about 30 - 35 hrs. week
without any question. You know, re a rr* n g to
Murphy, cause you call them and ask questions.
Murphy: Sure.
O'Connell: we are only here on Wednesday, there may be
board meetings to attend, run to Boston to the
State House, telephone calls at home From 5 t
p,,m.
Garland: , There' s no quarrel with George whatsoever. The
vote o ' the town was clone on a temporary basis..
Now, if the Town does vote that there shall be
one full time selectman
• McCartney: Did the article say that
Garland: No.
O' Connell: There is no provision in the law for a full time
selectman. Your a selectman period. what they
did was by amendment on town f loor, by John
Ferguson, that stated George Benway shall get
$20, 000; the other two shall get $2, 5000
Garland: The town meeting did in act vote that .there shall be
a full time selectman and two part time selectmen, it
would automatically go on a ballot on that basis.
Then whoever decided that they wanted to run for
that would do so.
Benway: That was not the intention nor the amendment o
the discussion. It was center around - the fact that
absence of the Executive Secretary (retirement) , and
.. we were still tied up with the tribal suit and where
do we go from here,
O' Connell: If we go back to what we said before and that was
the situation, I would never run for office, - in any
town, if they had one full time and two part time
members..
Remember too, that when that action was taken on
town meeting floor, Chet was not a Selectman.
Y
