MASHPEE HUMAN SERVICES COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES
MAY 20, 2009
Present: Mary Scanlan, John Cahalan, Vye Larkin, Gus Fredericks, Elinor Glener, Ronnie
Warden, Cynthia Green, Gail Wilson. Absent: Jim Long,Kevin Terrill.
The meeting opened at 3:00 p.m. in the Selectmen's meeting room.
The November 2008 Minutes were approved unanimously.
Gail Willson presented the Committee's Objectives along with a history of the Committee for the
benefit of new members. Gail presented her Coordinator's Report dated May 20, 2009. Gail has
been working with different departments, forming a task force,to understand and solve human
issues and problems. She has been working particularly with the Council on Aging, and most
recently, on hoarding behavior and assessment. Ronnie noted that hoarding has become a public
health issue. It needs to be identified and dealt with properly.
The MHS meeting day and time were reviewed, and a motion was made by John Cahalane to
meet as a Committee on the 3rd Thursday at 3:00 p.m. Seconded, and unanimously approved.
The Committee will recess in July and August.
Gail is in the process of getting contracts ready. There has been a 1% cut in budget. Two
contracts were reduced: CCCD by$255 and South Coastal Legal Services by $350. Motion to
invite Raymond Yox from South Coastal Legal Services to a meeting was moved, seconded., and
unanimously approved. Gail will follow this up.
Gail will begin doing site visits and welcomes any member to join her.
John Cahalan suggested looking into the veterans as a resource. Gail can prepare statistics
showing how many Mashpee residents are being served.
Cynthia Green and Jim Long represent us on the Mashpee Human Service Council. They will
send out the Minutes from these meetings to our members.
Shall the Committee do something for July 40'? Perhaps the theme of Rights of Immigrants
might be appropriate. There is a Barnstable County Human Rights Commission that might be
more suitable. A good contact is Jackie Field who might be helpful with International Day at the
High School.
Members need to send a letter of intent to serve another term on the Committee. Kevin Terrill
will be resigning this year and not renewing his term.
The meeting adjourned 4:00 p.m.
Mar sthorpe, Re rding Secretary
Y
