' l
k
NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
i
Good morning, AmeriCorps Mike!
By Michael Sousa
My one-day-a-week individual placement at the Massachusetts Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary for the past
eleven months has taught me some interesting things. One thing I have learned is how to positively ID a number of
different species on the Sanctuary and around Cape Cod. This is all thanks to Mark Faherty, the Science Coordinator for
the Sanctuary and my service partner. His encyclopedic knowledge of all things feathery, furry, slimy, and exoskeleton-
y, has left me wondering how anyone can know so much and still be hilarious.
I have experienced a lot this year working alongside the property manager, James, and his assistant,Lyn. I have learned
how to properly manage and maintain a heathland setting and return a parcel of land to an early successional habitat . I
have also had the opportunity to work alongside James to learn the many nuanced tricks of up-keeping an entire
Sanctuary. I have learned that AmeriCorps Cape Cod Alum Emily
Wolfe,Jess MacManus, and Amy Fleischer, the education and
outreach staff have the incredible knack for putting on successful and 1
wildly(no pun intended)popular events with minimal help.If I am
enlisted to aid them in any way, I always leave having learned
t
something new. f
To the many other staff who know me by"AmeriCorps Mike,"all of
you have, at very least, taught me how to be welcoming and inclusive
to the countless seasonal and part-time staff that cycle in and out of the rr.
office. I wish I had the memory to remember all of the staff I've met dY V `' '
in the past two months. At least I can recall meeting that tall person
before or"that's definitely the woman who let me use her pen once." ;;
All joking aside, serving at the Mass. Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife z
Sanctuary has been a fantastic experience. I have learned a range of
lessons and factoids that I will definitely carry with me for quite some
time and it is all thanks to the environment and the incredible staff that
Audubon has produced. And I would be lying if I said that I did not
like my new name.
f
11
